Common Questions

1. Introduction

  • We are software developers with over 20 years of experience.
  • We create open source software.
  • We care about privacy, safety and security.
  • We are people behind Tigase software.

There are few significant differences between Tygrys offer and any of the above mentioned and many others:

  • All services run on fully open source software. No hidden code, no hidden functions. Fully transparent.
Professionals can verify what is being done with customers data.
  • Each customer get an exclusive, full system to use. E-Mail server is not shared with other customers, Messaging server is not shared with other customers, Projects/code server is not shared with other customers. Database keeping all the data is not shared with other customers. All is yours and only for you to use.
  • There is no per-user charge or subscription. A customer gets a full system with resources to use. There is no limitation on a number of users to create, number of messages to exchange within the system resources capabilities.
Each system has a specific size and resources, so the customer is limited by physical resources available not by artificial "business rules".

We value:

  • Freedom to control own data and own information.
  • Privacy and control who can see our messages and our information.
  • Safety and control who we want to talk to, who can send us a message.
  • Transparency to see how our data and information is processed by software we use.

These are not synonyms. These terms have distinct meaning.

  • Private means that information is for your eyes only, yours and people with whom you communicate. Nobody else can peek into them. No advertizers, no big-tech, nobody...
  • Secure means all the communication is encrypted with modern encryption methods and algorithms.
  • Safe means this is your system and access to the system is granted by yourself, no abuse from strangers, no hate speech and no trolling.

2. Functionality

  • Fully functional e-mail system with webmail, IMAP, SMTP access, aliases, custom domains, and much more.
  • Fully functional messaging system with private chats, group chats, files sharing and much more.
  • Fully functional project management system with issue tracking, agile boards and much more.
  • Fully functional code management system compatible with Git-SCM with CI/CD pipelines, code review and much more.

Yes!

Our software uses public technologies and public standards which are currently in use worldwide. You can connect any mobile e-mail app to the Tygrys e-mail server. No need to change your preferences or your current workflow.
The same goes for the messaging server. It is based on an open technology known as XMPP/Jabber. There are many mobile and desktop apps which can be used. We recommend using apps we developed specifically to make it simple to and user-friendly. Check them out.
Finally our code management server uses Git-SCM, de-facto standard in code software management with access over git or https protocols. There are many mobile apps allowing to access git code repositories.
For all users who prefer web-based access, we offer web applications for e-mail, messaging and code management.

You should choose our service if you value:

  • Your privacy. Your data is for you only, no third-party can peek into your data.
  • Your safety. You communicate only with people you want, no trolling, no hate speach no abuse.
  • Your security. Security of your service and your data is in your hands, no third-party decide for you what is right.
  • Your money. You do not overpay for each user account. You buy server capabilities and can you can make a full use of all resources purchased.
  • All the software is open source, there is no hidden data processing or handling.
  • We use modern and open security standards such as SSL/TLS protocols for transmission, SASL for user authentication.
  • All data is stored in database hidden behind a firewall, inaccessible from the Internet.
  • Daily backup is run for all the data and stored for 7 days or more depending on subscription.
  • No access is given to the system and data to any third-party.
  • You have entirely separated system, running exclusively for you. No database sharing no other resources sharing. There is no chance for "accidental" data mixing, leaking or "sharing" with other customers

E-Mail with Tygrys is more private that with any other provider. Any other big provider can peek into your messages, can scan them and/or can share content or scanning results with anybody they want. You would not even know about it.

With Tygrys, there is no messages scanning, no third-party access, no peeking. All the data is available to you and you only.

Only You can access to your data but also you have sole responsibility for your data.

You have a dedicated system running exclusively for you. No resources sharing, no database sharing, no "accidental" data mixing, sharing or leaking.

No account banning, no messages deleting and no censorship. You decide what accounts you have and what messages you exchange.

At least 1 server is required to run all the software required for e-mail, messaging and code services. However, if this one server breaks then at least services would be interrupted until a new server is started up, all the software is installed and data recovered.
In the worse case scenario, some data would be lost since the last backup.
Without redundancy, recovery time, after the server breaks can take a few hours to 1 day and requires data recovery from backups.

To improve reliability and prevent service interruption we have redundancy, that is an additional server running all the software and duplicating all the data. In a system with redundancy active, even if 1 server breaks, the other still works and can automatically take over all the services and users' requests.

In systems with redundancy active there is no data loss if one of the server breaks. Typically, there is no service interruption, with users simply having to reconnect to continue working. Sometimes, in the worse case, the interruption can last a few seconds.
With redundancy, recovery time, after server breaks takes from 0 to a few seconds and is fully automatic with no need to recover data from backups.

Our messaging system allows users to share files between team members or even with users having accounts on other systems.
However, when a file is shared, content of the file is uploaded onto the server and only link to the file is sent over to the other user. This greatly reduces the load on the server, reduces the network usage and improves the communication performance and also reduces the space usage on your device.
At the same time, the file is always available to download by all users who received the link to the shared file.
This is especially important if a file is shared with multiple users or inside the group chat room.

While this saves space on your device, at the same time it requires space on the server to store all shared files. Hence, our services have a dedicated space allocated to shared files.

Is it safe? Are all my shared files secure?
Shared files are not publicly visible and accessible. To access the file you have to have file link, which is obscured and impossible to guess. Therefore, people who do not have the link, cannot access the file. Only people who know the file link can access it.

There is no restrictions in the software on a number of user accounts you can create. Therefore, in this sense, in theory, you can have unlimited number of users.
However, to keep prices low, the servers have specific capacity in terms of disk space, memory, CPU power and network bandwidth.
Hence, the recommended number of users for a specific setup is what the system can comfortably handle without performance impact or system overload.

That's said, our recommendations are for a typical usage scenarios. Therefore, your system may handle more active users or less active users, depending on your use-case.
The system monitoring shows you in real-time how far or how close you are to the system limits.

Yes! if you want to do so and no, if you do not want to do so.

We use standard and open technologies for all our systems. E-mail uses standard e-mail protocols and messaging is based on XMPP technology which is also a standard and open communication protocol. Therefore, you can communicate with all other people who use XMPP/Jabber based chat systems. In particular any user who has an account on Tygrys based system. However, any XMPP/Jabber system can exchange messages with Tygrys chat.

However, if you prefer, you can disable communication with outside world. This is useful if the system runs for a closed team of people who exchange confidential information, and you want to avoid any leaks.
Alternatively, instead of disabling outside communication altogether, you can disable/enable communication with specific remote servers only.

Disasters do not happen often, but they do happen, and we have to be prepared to handle them properly to protect your data and allow you to use the system.

There are 2 levels of disaster we are prepared for:

  1. A single server failure
  2. Entire cluster failure

Please note, disasters like this are very rare. In our entire history we had a handful single server failures, and we have never had the entire cluster failure.

A single server failure

For a single server failure on clusters with 2 servers, restoration if fully automated and transparent.

For Medium and Large systems all applications from the failed server are redeployed to the remaining server right away. As the application data is mirrored on both servers, they are ready to use without a delay. The service interruption usually lasts a few seconds. Normally not more than 45 seconds.

For Small system, all application data is still mirrored on both servers but applications themselves cannot be fit into memory on a single server. Therefore, they cannot be redeployed until the second server is added to the cluster. This usually takes about 11 minutes but may take as long as 30 minutes. Then the server applications are redeployed on the new server.

In both cases, after adding the second server, the application data must be re-synced to the new server which may temporarily affect the performance of the system. This is typically not significant unless the server is under a very high load.

Personal system runs on a single server only. Therefore, if this server fails, this is the same as the entire cluster failure. How we handle the entire cluster failure is explained below.

Entire cluster failure

Entire cluster failure happens when all the servers are lost. There is no machine to run server applications and no data mirrors available on any disks. So nothing works at all.

Of course we are prepared for this case. Every system makes automatic, regular backups on a daily basis. Backups are stored "off-site", away from the cluster. Therefore, if the entire cluster fails, all customer data are still safe. Entire cluster, all server apps and user data can be restored from these backups.

However, restoring cluster from backup is semi-automated process, which involves our technical team to maintain the process. Also, depending on how much user data was kept on the cluster, the transfer of this data from backup, restoring data volumes, rebuilding everything may take a significant time. Usually a few hours are required for the process to complete, but it may take up to 2 days in some cases.

3. Payments

There is no free plan.

The reason for this is, that for every customer we deploy dedicated servers to work exclusively for that customer. This generates a significant cost to run the dedicated service.
Please note, we do not sell users' data, we do not sell users' information, we do not display ads or profit in any way from users' accounts. We make money from running services for you.

However, we do offer discounts, promotions and codes. Keep an eye on our Tygrys Twitter account, our website, mailing lists and other channels.

At the moment we accept all major credit cards.
We are also working on adding more payment methods, so please stay tuned to receive recent updates. If you need support for a specific payment method not currently available, please send us a message, and we will do our best to accommodate you.

When you buy a subscription from us, we order dedicated servers for you. These servers are reserved and paid for, for the period of selected subscription.

For this reason we cannot offer a refund on already purchased subscription.
